between 3.4.1 and 3.4.2 the mouse plugin received no related changes,
which also indicates a build/toolchain problem.
Removing the mouse plugin at leaset makes g-s-d stable for me, so I've done

I have the background transparency set almost 90% to the maximum. Though

For some reason, my headphones began working automagically last night.
No idea why, but now everything works fine. Gnome-volume-control
doesn't crash anymore, and the headphone shows up in output and is
selectable. Go figure.

To me, they seem related. I can "Test Speakers" on the standard audio,
but not on the headphones. I suppose a hardware driver bug could be
exposing an unrelated gnome-volume-control bug, though. All of this
worked fine in lucid & maverick.
