There is a possibility this is a HDW prob. I swapped in a USB
reader/write and most of the problem went away. I will let you know
what happens when I get a third piece of HDW to try.

As of this date my Ubuntu is the latest version. Jucies sometimes will slow
down from a 9+x start to well under 1x. This will happen with no apps open on
my IBM ThinkPad 41 with 1m and 40g.
