I worked around this by logging into a Unity session (if Unity is
installed, select it from the "Sessions" menu at the login prompt),
entering the credentials for the network and successfully connecting,
then logging back into GNOME which now remembers the network settings.
It's a very annoying bug indeed, and it would be nice if it could be
flagged as a high priority issue for GNOME/Ubuntu users.
