I have almost the same problem, but for me it don't help to switch to console and back to x. After i have written the password i can see the mousepointer changing when i move it across the screen, depending on what is suppose to be showing (link in firefox, text input, etc), but the screen stays

Manually compiling the newer versions of vinagre does not work. I have compiled version 0.5.2 (the same version as in hardy) and that seems to fix it. I first tried compiling 2.24.2 and 2.26.1. Both suffered the same issue -- Local mouse pointer disappears https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/278489
