I now found a way to reproduce it: Once you've set up the proxy system-wide and
then restarted the system, it does not reset the proxy if you tell him to do
so, at least not in a way that makes echo $http_proxy return nothing.
So you do the following:
* set up proxy system wide
* restart
* reset
I don't know, it's working fine right now. Have there been any changes to the
proxy code?
I will try to reproduce again.

I agree, this bug hasn't been fixed for several months now.
Why don't you remove the feature if there is no fix? It is bad for the whole
Linux community to release something which has proven not to work at all!
(Especially if you consider how common using this Google plugin probably is)

I am sorry, I confused this bug with another bug. The one where the
password prompt does not show up until you start the synaptic or
whatever twice. That can be solved by solving that sudo-issue.
Nevermind.

Did you check if something like

Just mentioning that because since I solved that bug (adjusting the primary
hostname and hostnames list in the network setup), the password dialog always
works.
