This is also presents a big Ubuntu usability issue for me too.. I have
spent years placing the taskbar/window list on the left hand side in
Windows, where it works sensibly and flawlessly (makes it much easier to
work with a large number of open windows).. have never seen it work
under Ubuntu.
Problem still exists.. I'm hitting it too using Ubuntu 10.04 amd64.
..and the temporary workaround (killall telepathy-butterfly) works here too.

This highly frustrating problem is equally present on Ubuntu 8.10

Can a general solution be found - such as whenever the height of a window
exceeds the height of the screen, automatically present a scrollbar to enable
accessing the bottom part of the window?
(same thing applies for
...by the way, you fall into this trap as easily as:
* Open the 'Screen Resolution' dialog
* Select 640x480
* Click Apply
now you are stuck...
