This doesn't seem to have been a problem with Banshee in Karmic (at
least it was find for me). Can we just go back to using the Karmic
banshee icon instead of the monochrome one in Lucid? Or is the problem
with ambiance theme?

The problem is that without -ugly the gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg is allowing
the playback of mp3s but the seeking is apparently broken in that
package. So for someone on the gstreamer team: please look into the
gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg package.
This bug also affects banshee and totem.

I still see the flicker (and sometimes text) when I log out in Karmic.
It should just smoothly transition back to the gdm.
I have an NVidia card.

Agreed. The new tool is better than nothing. But I (and I am guessing
many users will really want) is a way to get rid of the ugly grey box.
It looks like it came from Windows 95. We went from a really sexy login
screen in 9.04 to a super ugly one in 9.10. I think more options should
be added
I have been spending some time patching Banshee for Android to work -
so, I got to know the code a bit. I had an old ipod, I put rockbox on,
as well, and was able to get it to work marvelously with Banshee by
including the file .is_audio_player on the iPod root directory. You
CANNOT leave it
Ok, I talked to the Banshee Dev. on IRC on if we can incorporate those
settings from the above .is_audio_player file into Banshee. He agreed
it was a bad idea to do it by default if a .rockbox folder is found due
to the dual booting issue. But, I am going to try to create an option
for the user
It seems this bug is actually not a duplicate, nor is it fixed upstream.
See, the gnome-devs new comment:

He says it is a problem with ubuntu-gtk+
