This isn't something that Ubuntu can really fix anyhow. Only Gnome's
developers should be willing to spend the time to fix, not Ubuntu's.

Accidentally did it again. It seems that the the file permissions are
change on every thing in all of / (root). Luckily I had the rooted
nautilus open, and so I was able to switch the /usr/bin and create a
working environment. I opened up gnome-panel, thus all the new programs
I lauch are in root
Why can't I view the new bug report. I also have this issue.

Also it might be noted that the experience is very much like running a
livecd and pulling out the disk. Or running from a usb stick and doing
the same thing. Expect that in this case it is still possible to browse
the file system from the rooted nautilus window.

I strongly suggest that if one's interested in this case that they might
want to try out in a VM, just for the first hand experience. I would
believe that this is easily replicable.

The rooted Nautilus window does not crash. But it seems that any
application does intensive io, and is not root, does in fact crash.
Although just a hunch, I have a feeling that this might be kernel
related. I reported this bug, after the second time that it had
happened, on my Windows XP installat
