Yes, the arrow points in the direction that the menu will expand. However
the arrow on top of the icon doesn't look right. The indicator applets also
have menus when you click on them, but don't have arrows. Hence I question
the need of an arrow on the menu.

When closing (returning to panel) the weather applet in an up-to-date
jaunty a 'untitled window' briefly appears in my window list. I am
running compiz.

I had switched back to human before I posted those file's, but I also thought
that I would clean up the gdm.conf-custom to see if that made a difference. And

No, I tried sudo shutdown -h again and it still asks me for my desktop
login, but if I wait for a while it does eventually shutdown my
computer.

The commands shutdown and init don't shut down my computer, but ask me to log
in for maintanance.
The day the problem occured I had copied the human gdm-theme to home and
changed it slightly and have been using that theme since then.
