I already tried to connect with an certificate that has not expired same
problem,
but I resolved this issue using this hint:

This doesn't work for me. Tried everything from
TLS_STARTTLS_PROTOCAL=SSL2 to TLS_STARTTLS_PROTOCAL=TLS1. Same error :-(

problems in Evolution 2.6.
Connection to a SMTP-Server with unsigned SSL-Ceritificate works without
problems and also in 2.6.
Connecting to this server is important for me!
