I had this issue but it seems to be working now. Current version of
gnome-screensaver: 2.27.0-0ubuntu3. I do not know which version fixed
the issue, as I disabled automatic screen locking as a temporary
workaround.

I also got this in 9.10. Seems very out of the blue, probably hard to
duplicate.
