Hopefully the following will be of help:
Actions to reproduce problem on Compaq D51S (Intel 845) using latest
2.26.27-4 generic are:
Boot - login - hangs when gnome-panel should display - no keyboard
access - can only cycle power. Can access gnome-panel etc from failsafe
terminal login.

Public bug reported:
Gnome-panel on Compaq D51S (Intel 845) still hangs on 2.26.27-4, similar
symptoms to bug #259385.
Power cycle only option. Gnome panel runs without window manager in
terminal mode.
