Ubuntu can't control backlight on my laptop. This happened also in 10.04
and 10.10 and I had to fix this using nvidia_bl driver (and it took
quite a lot of time to set the correct parameters. Other function keys
work properly.
Problem
I have this kind of problem on a Sony VAIO CW2C5E (nVidia 310M). The
only way to control screen backlight is using nvidiabl module from
https://github.com/guillaumezin/nvidiabl
I can see gnome power monitor correctly interfaces with backlight module
because changing settings in gconf works. Anywa

Well, if I don't install nvidia_bl module (found here
http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=143025) I don't even
have backlight support, and if I press the Fn keys nothing happens.

If I uninstall hal package (which should be deprecated in 10.04 right?) the
brightness hotkeys are not passed to gnome-power-manager, thus the screen
dimming does not change.
