Or is something else being used?

thumbnails may have been generated by older software that ignored the

The svn trunk version of gthumb uses exiv2 instead of libexif, and it
seems to work better with these images (no garbage strings).
However, it seems clear that these images do not have correctly coded
orientation tags. I don't know how a camera could mess that up. exiftool
reports the orientation

If you select multiple files, gThumb is supposed to go into the catalog
mode and show the "Command Line Catalog". That part of your report is
"not a bug".

That's interesting - the "high quality" mode applies anti-aliasing,
which usually improves the viewed image - but not in your application.
