I have created a new user and I have been unable to replicate the
problem. After removing any gnome/gtk related .files in my home
directory the problem has now disappeared. Theme previews are also
working again.

stopped studying Slovene and Serbian, so I have removed that layout from my
keyboard layouts.
The work-around, incidentally, is to have Serbian as the 2nd option, and
Cyrillic 3rd - that way you can cycle through
