Actually, I was changing the /etc/hosts file for apache server configuration
and accidentally removed "127.0.0.1 localhost" line from that.
and the above mentioned programs stopped functioning. I still don't know why
only the programs started as root were affected.
So you should check your /etc/
oops... accidentally removed localhost from hosts

This is happening on my Hardy Laptop too.
even nautilus is not starting as root.
the terminal just hangs when I enter "sudo nautilus" or "sudo gedit" or "sudo
gvim"
