I can reproduce it. I believe that the gnome-panel somehow doesn't
trigger the unhide when the mouse reaches the end of the screen too
fast. I got this behaviour after an update to 8.04. The same pannel was
working fine in 7.10.

when you start gaim it doesn't connect automatically. You have to choose
offline, then available, and this time it connects. But produces the error:
"unable to add"
could not add one buddy for unknown reason.
