As noted by http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=678760, if one
wants just SMB shares, open an nautilus window (e.g., Places->Home
Folder), hit CONTROL-L, and enter smb:/// in the location entry field.
Just a quick workaround using what you already have.

Thanks for the update. I read the upstream defect, and can report that
at least as of now (I've already installed all of tonight's updates, and
hadn't tried it before), although I cannot drag URLs to the Desktop*, I
can drag URLs to other folders.
* Actually, I can drag to the Desktop as a folder
As of tonight, with all updates installed, desktop URLs launch Firefox,
so that's fixed. But I still cannot drag URLs from Firefox to the
Desktop. Should probably have created two bug entries.
