Please stop insinuating that this is a Ubuntu problem. It's not.
Ubuntu does not write/maintain GDM.

I upgraded today and I lost the volume applet.
I started a Lucid upgrade this morning at 8:50 EDT albeit with the beta2
DVD. An hour later I mopped up with a network upgrade.
