Just to add my two cents: although this has been already mentioned in comment 83 I'd like to add that to mute the "PC Beep", just select it with the arrow keys and press 'm'. Simply setting the volume bars to 0 is *not* enough! This completely solved the issue for me in Lucid on a Dell XPS M1530. (
