I haven't upgraded to Karmic yet: too many jobs on the go at present to
risk my computer being down for even a day or two. I'm hoping to
upgrade before the end of this month (January).

Recovered from bug by deleting the subfolder's .cmeta and .index files,
then restarted Evolution. Can now see the previously missing e-mail
messages.
