Yep, I had changed that setting too. And after upgrading to 9.10, the
issue disappeared; and I didn't make my usual change of clickSelectsAll.
That must be it.
So the current temporary workaround for this bug: turn off
clickSelectsAll.

I disabled gnome-volume-manager and restarted... Well oddly enough,
gnome-session-remove --list still showed the volume manager as having
been executed, so I ended it but the startup continued to stall.

I am experiencing the same thing with Compiz. The Desktop Effects applet
sucks, it hardly gives any options (well, 2 to be precise), that's not
an excuse to not fix this problem.
I think this should be ramped
