On intrepid, Gnome no longer offers the option that a non-superuser can
shut down, only log out.
For the superuser, 'shut down' just logs you out, and takes you back to
gdm, when others are logged in. (Perhaps there should be an explanation
here). Presumably one can then force shutdown from

I don't see why this would need to be done in nautilus, per se. Why not
let me open the file as read only, then when it asks me if i want to
save (in gedit, vim, etc), say to save this file, you need root
privileges or something, and give the standard password prompt (with

FWIW, even windows works this way (as in, once the source window is
closed, the data is lost).
Having glipper as a dep would solve this though.
