I installed dconf-tools package, I opened the dconf-editor and pressed "Set to
default" for every value under /org/gnome/Totem/ -- now totem doesn't stop
after the 1st second.

I agree with era :)
The problem was fixed in system-tools-backends package which is not used by any
kde package:
$ apt-cache rdepends system-tools-backends
system-tools-backends
Reverse Depends:
gnome-system
As you can see at the bug status, I have nominated it for Jaunty and
Karmic, we will see what the ubuntu folks say about it. :)
