Laptop will not suspend when lid is closed

My Dell XPS M1530 will not suspend when the lid is closed. The settings
are all appropriately set. The lid close and open events are being
recognized by dbus, but for some reason, GPM is ignoring the lid close.
Suspend works fine if I choose Suspend from the menu or if I
I had the same bug, and in my case, I manually stopped the
plexmediaserver (which I had manually installed) before trying to
shutdown. This solved the problem. My guess is that there is a daemon
process running as a user that gnome-session sees as being logged in.
I'm not sure how gnome-session
