Hmm... it looks like I had a phantom update-alternatives in
/usr/local/bin, which superceded the official one. Not sure where it
came from, but removing it fixed the problem. Thanks for your attention
on this (as it turns out) non-bug.

Sorry to take so long to reply.
Yes, I've reproduced it with a new user and on seperate machines.
I forgot to add that in the preferences window under "Mail Preferences"
and the "HTML Mail" tab you have to select "Prefer PLAIN" or "Only ever
show PLAIN".
It occurs to me also to mention that thes
* Enable the "Prefer plain-text" plugin from the Edit->Plugins menu.
* Have someone send you a meeting request.
Instead of the fancy display with the accept and decline buttons, you'll
see a plain text message that lists the date, time, and place of the
meeting along with any notes.
