I have the same problem with a Canon S5 IS. The camera is auto-mounted, then the "Import Photos" dialog appears and there is the error message. Unmounting the camera, then running the import again it works. Note, that I upgraded from 8.04.1, I did not install from scratch. -- Ubuntu 8.10 can't
