Hello. I have the same problem using openoffice.org 1:2.4.1-1ubuntu1
from Fri Jun 13 14:46:42 UTC 2008 on AMD64.

The main user cannot start OpenOffice anymore using conventional means
like double click on a document or using the menu.

However running only the core '/usr/lib/openoffice/program/soffice'
without loading any specific module (writer, calc...) works nicely for
me. I can create or open a new document and the appropriate module will
be run with no problems at all. Also giving it a file as (the only)
argument will load and display it just fine.
