When I try to install unity-2d-shell or unity-2d-panel, I get the error:
Depends: unity-2d-common (= 5.7.0-0ubuntu1) but is not installable
Occured after an apt-get upgrade. Have attached apt logs to show
packages upgraded today (3/19/2012)

With no xorg.conf, 1 screen display, but system menu bar quits on login
and it and unity launcher and panel are unavailable. With xorg.conf
attached below, login is not possible

When logging in, the login screen displays. After entering password, the
message "Failed to load session "ubuntu"" is displayed and logout is the
only option.
In the syslog, the messages come from gnome-session stating:
WARNING: Session 'ubuntu' runnable check failed: Exited
