I have the same behavior on my asus eeepc 4G on a clean netbook remix
install of Alpha 5.
I believe it is a race condition, as once it has not happened, maybe the
speed of the SSD disk is highlighting this bug.
When I have the blank screen (with just a promt in the top corner) I

800x480, the GDM greeter looks good, until you select a user, then the
bottom row of items overlap each other and look messy and unreadable.
Maybe we can use the resolution to choose
I have the same problem, however I am on an EEEpc (701) which has a
solid state disk. I am not sure that you can enable smart on these
disks.

I see the same problem, however the CPU load is normal when the size of
the window is about 400px high (normal) if I make it about 600px or full
screen the cpu load goes higher the bigger the window the higher the
load.
This is when I am on the Resources Tab (graphs)
I'm on Hardy beta 64bit
