Hardware and software are modified.

It's not a matter of laziness or efficiency or whatever. The X core
protocol only allows for four keyboard groups, full stop. You can't
have more than four layouts without magically changing your keymap when
you switch to a layout n >= 4, which is incredibly difficult.

installing gnome-power-manager did the trick for me, thanks for the
link. now I have that ugly behaviour that is filed in another bug i
think. the system shuts down, but the usplash-screen is not properly
shown (I see a text console login first, then i see the second half of
the usplash shutdown sc
