Found the problem - previous version of Evolution handled all settings
in the main window settings dialouge. For some reason those settings
does not take effect in the new/ reply mail window. Needed to do the SSL
settings there as well.
I would still classify this as a bug since the new behaviour

mail works fine !!! Previous version of Evolution (Ubuntu 10.04) worked

Hi pedro,you may close it - circumvented using other sw. The bug may persist
though - have not tested it
