this is the case in both gnome 2.22 and 2.24.
I used nvidia-settings for the configuration.
Xinerama is disabled.

the problem is that crashes is the wrong word, it just doesn't respond anymore.
a error window is shown, though this is not being filled with any
information(so a empty window with "error" as the title)
/var/crash is therefore empty.
though this bug seems to not be there on every bootup. I can't
got the problem on Intrepid beta, too.
changing to OSS works, with autodetect and alsa I get the above stated errors.
the stuff luke describes doesn't work.

the deskbar applet in the 2 screen the search window is shown on the 1
screen, on the 1 screen it is though shown on the same screen.

after this bug occurs I got another gnome-panel process
the 3 CPU consuming processes were active even though the bug described wasn't
produced yet btw.
A "killall gnome-panel" results in a "normal" gnome-panel process that
uses nearly no CPU, and the bug described above is not there anymore.

consuming processes, being >80% all the time

I got here 2 Monitors, which run on separate x screens, configured via the
the same "problem" exists if you run alacarte as root.
the .desktop files probably are owned by root.
you might go to ".local/share/applications" an look for root:root files.(there
are other places for .desktop files you might consider those too)

got a really high CPU usage here too
Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU T7300 @ 2.00GHz
a Graph for CPU usage should be as seamless as possible. I'm using an Interval
of 1 second.
Futhermore I have the gnome panel applet monitor enabled, too, which acts like
a CPU mon should, it nearly doesn't use
