I just tried it out in jaunty with the newest version of update-manager
installed. The update-manager window still notifies the window manager, and in
my case the window button in the task bar starts to blink, for example when the
packages are downloaded and the installation starts.

Thank you for reminding me of this bug. It is no longer an issue for me,
because the xmodmap seems to have been adjusted so this bug is no longer
caused - neither in Hardy nor in Intrepid. I think it can be closed.

I tried to find out elements in the xmodmap file cause the problem. It
occurs whenever there is a symbol declared for the sixth level. When I
delete the declarations for the sixth level or replace them with
NoSymbol, the dialog works.

I just found out what causes the bug, but I could not yet find out why

Public bug reported:
Binary package hint: gnome-screensaver
Whenever my screen is locked with gnome-screensaver, it is impossible to make
the unlock dialog appear. Moving the mouse shows the cursor for a short amount
of time, but the dialog does not appear. It seems quite similar to LP: #165033
I already reported this bug upstream:
http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=362809
Seems as if the guys from gnome don't want to implement this...
