In Gnome 2, Ubuntu had a patch applied to gnome-panel that would create a
shortcut to the folder when it was dragged and dropped from the 'Places' menu
to the desktop.
In 'Gnome Classic' session Gnome 3 panel, this patch is not applied, so a copy
of the folder is created.
This issue just appeared in 12.04 after a dist-upgrade and reboot.
