Sorry for the late reply because of busy. Due to the missing of file /var/log/messages, I edited the file /etc/rsyslog.d/50-default.conf. Then, I rebooted my computer. After reboot, the file /var/log/messages appeared. Then, I reproduced the problem without using the workaround I stated in #9. A

Continue from my comment #3. Ubuntu is able to detect that the brightness has been reduced, but the GNOME Power Manager's configuration was not updated. That caused the brightness to be reset to 100% which is the brightness setting in GNOME Power Manager. Again, the bug still exist in Ubuntu 10.1
