I have an Audigy 2 sound card and in order to record sound, I have to
enable the the Analog Mix (Recording) input and turn up the volume
sliders. My microphone is plugged into the mic jack on my sound card.

however upon reopening the X is back. And as he stated, the input CAN
be used for recording, it is just unclear for the average user if the
input is indeed enabled.
