I removed the nvidia drivers coming with the distro, and installed the
latest 64bit drivers from the Nvidia website (270.41.06) just in case.

Forgot to add... this freeze also occurs when the system is switched
from AC to battery power, as well as when it is booted on battery. My
wild guess is that this is related to automatic change to the brightness
settings. Basically the system is not usable on battery power.

It seems that removing ~/Desktop/, going to GDM, logging in (now GNOME
uses ~ as Desktop folder), recreating Desktop won't do the trick. User
will still end up with visual clutter and no easy way to go back.
There's a file in ~/.config/user-dirs.dirs
But there's no easy way to revert changes. 'For human beings' is
Ubuntu's tagline. Don't delete it would be OK if ~/Desktop/ was some
super-protected meta-directory. You can see it browsing your home. You
can delete it. There's no warning and there's no coming back.
