I tried the resetting folder properties to open folders using the 'file browser', as Robert suggested and presto it's all back to the way it was. I remember the archive manager was trying to open the zip file i downloaded and it would appear to load and then nothing would happen. I tried this several times and still nothing. I closed all windows and then manged to get to the file and open manually with the archive manager. Anyway, after listening to the music files I couldn't open my places folders anymore without Rythymbox opening instead.
