I fixed it. I was able to resize the Window Selector Applet with
gconf-editor and moving some applets in the panel around so I could access
the applet preferences and deleted the WSA and now everything looks OK - I
don't know if having a Window Selector Applet resized to invisibility
constitutes a
I added the Window Selector Applet to both the top and bottom panels - it's
supposed to display a folder icon but usually displays an icon for firefox
instead (randomly of course choosing between two different firefox icons)
and the list of windows it displays is complete only some of the time -
so
I just discovered something - some of the windows which should appear in the
lower panel with the other window buttons are in the upper panel but there
is a button section that is almost if not completely invisible in the top
panel
I had to move the panels around and then delete and then recreate

and when I tried to install Maverick Meerkat with it installed, both screens
filled with green and red and bla
It's reproducible. I've rebooted several times and it happens every time. I
don't do anything special just open windows.
I do have 2 identical displays in an over under configuration - the primary
as far as the driver/board is concerned is on the bottom by default and I
have them mapped the other
Weird Quirk/Workaround - If I open a Nautilus window, it does not appear
in the panel BUT if I move it across a window boundary i.e. open it in
workspace 1 and move it to cross the workspace 1/workspace 2 boundary
and then move it back into workspace 1 poof the window appears in the
panel.

The update also seems to have reset the permissions on my optical drive
so that my burning software no longer has permission to access the drive
and seems to have ruined a disk that was in a drive with hardware and
software designed to prevent just this from ever happening. kudos - the

Sorry, I forgot to mention that if I do show windows, the windows which
do not show in the panel also do not appear in the show windows display
either.

I updated my system this morning. I have been updating daily for firefox
