Specific to the sound applet.
Did some more testing:
1) If there are 2 sound applets and I remove one: the second one crashes.
2) Then I added one and after restart the one that crashed reappeared -> 2
applets again.
3) back to point 1.

I accidentally added a second sound volume applet to the panel and
removed one of them afterwards..
Now, every time I restart the panel the removed one reappears.
They are both present in gconf.. even after removing one of them..

after cleaning up my home folder and deleting all unimportant and
gnome/gtk configs everything is back to normal...
this machine had 3 full upgrades since the first installation so the
config was probably messed up..
I'm wondering why some bad config can slow down all gtk apps..
