@TraceyC - I had a clean install of Karmic on a new partition and then
ported the data from the old installation of evolution. I have to say
that so far so good... the problem seems to have disappeared for me (I
upgraded last week-end, so I tested it only for the past 7 days, but
before the problem

A couple of additional info:
1. The problem also presents itself with two POP accounts (gmail). So,
it does not seem necessarily related to exchange, IMAP or similar.
2. For me the culprit does not seem to be "evolution" but "evolution-
data-server-
