I like the generic approach. The user's first name, properly
capitalized, is a pretty good solution, as it's not misleading nor
cryptic. No unfamiliar terms whatsoever, and if their name is there,
then it must be their area. It's kind of intuitive.
It's also a nice bridge between the Windows world

Turns out /bin/sh symlinks to /bin/dash, a strict POSIX-compliant
minimalist shell from Debian. My scripts were expecting bash, and none
of them were being triggered for this reason. Problem solved.

Hi Stefan, thanks for the fast reply.
I'm running Hardy Heron 8.04.1 with all the latest updates. My version
of gdm is 2.20.7-0ubuntu1.1. Where appropriate, I've renamed the files
to Default instead of Default.sample, and granted them +x as well.
No luck.
