There was no *obvious* indication that I was removing the "Indicator
Applet" during this upgrade. Why would I?

Using "Upgrade Manager" to do online upgrade from 9.10 Karmic to 10.04 Lucid on
Sat 2010-05-01.
Same problem - Volume Control icon disappears. Took finding this thread to
solve problem. Very annoying to take an entire weekend looking for a solution.
