I have similar bug with Ubuntu 7.04 + driver "ati" or "fglrx"
Step to reproduce error:
1- Login user "A"
2- change to user "B" (both session are open "A" & "B")
3- User B use PC more than 1 min.
4- Click logout button or change user botton "system hang"
Hang with driver "Ati" or "fglrx" the only
I think this bug should be close and I will open one new.
1 week ago I used Ubuntu 7.04 beta + all updates
Now I used Ubuntu 7.04 final + all updates. This error disapear because

I use Ubuntu Feisty 7.04 (only with this version, I Use ubuntu since
hoary in the same computer) . The sound (that repeat all the time) is
/usr/share/sounds/question.wav.
Provisional solution.
Pause in system monitor gdmgreeter.
