I am using 10.04 LTS specifically so as not to have to chase upgrades every 6 months. I do not plan to upgrade this machine until perhaps 12.04 LTS is released so I am afraid I cannot confirm if the issue exists in Natty. It does still occur on 10.04 on occasion even with the latest patches install

Sorry this seems to be a false alarm. I rebooted the PC and Disk Utility correctly shows the format type as ext4. For what it is worth I reformatted one of the drives from ext3 to ext4 using Disk Utility and the other from the command line. They were both ext3 to start with. Both of them did sh
