I have a similar issue. It is intermittent upon logging in to my system;
it will some times happen and others it will not, with no telltale sign
as to why. I have never used evolution(mistakenly opened it once or
twice, but always canceled out of the configuration wizard), and I do
not have a wireless card installed in my computer, so it is not directly
related to that, as suggested by ergo, above. Nor have I inserted an
audio cd in to my dvd drive(actually, there is seldom a disc in my
drive).

I have a dual core Athlon 64 chip, and its process takes up full usage
of one core(it does not touch the other one), and have not personally
experienced any issue with my mouse while this problem occurs. Perhaps,
though, the lack of issue with my mouse is because I still have one core
of my CPU to handle it.
