I ended up installing Ubuntu Studio a few months back, and since then
this hasn't been an issue. I'm not sure if it's because it's a fresh
install or because I'm using a different branch though.

I just tried dragging the same file that caused the original crash and
it created a shortcut on the panel this time. How would I tell what
version of libgtk I have? I would assume it's the latest in the ubuntu
7.04 repo, I have all the updates installed.

Public bug reported:
Binary package hint: rhythmbox
When I first try to start rhythmbox it will load the icon in my tray, but when
I click play it disappears. I tried to reopen it but it never opened. I ran
rhythmbox -d from a terminal and got this:
(07:53:19) [0x80f4028] [rb_debug_init_match]
I got a bit more data from rhythmbox by killing the process I found running and
restarting it.
Here's what happens when I click play:
(22:55:16) [0x80f4028] [rb_tray_icon_button_press_event_cb] rb-tray-icon.c:436:
tray button press
