I discovered the core issue. The file /usr/share/gconf/schemas/compiz- commands.schemas was corrupted. I repaired the File System with e2fsck, and then replaced it with a copy from another 12.04 instance. Then I manually installed libunity-core and unity with dpkg. I ran sudo apt-get check and
