I agree that this bug is really a put-off to a newbie installing Ubuntu for
the first time. It took me quite a while to guess what was needed to get
the dialog to go Forward. Not a good first impression.

After further searching, I found that there indeed exists a software
workaround. Despite GTK's bug you can still have the initial installer
work properly:
